There are times in life when we simply do not understand what is happening. We may wonder why something happened, what will happen next, or how everything is going to work out. During those moments, it can be easy to depend on our own thoughts and try to figure everything out ourselves.
But Proverbs 3:5–6 gives us a beautiful reminder to put our trust in the Lord.
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV) says:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Trust God Even When You Don't Understand
God tells us to trust Him with all our heart. That means our trust in God should not depend on whether our circumstances make sense.
It can be easier to trust God when everything is going well and life is happening the way we hoped. But what about when we don't know what is coming next? What about when something happens that we don't understand?
We can still trust Him.
We don't have to understand everything God is doing in order to believe that He knows what He is doing.
Don't Lean on Your Own Understanding
The second part of Proverbs 3:5 tells us:
“...lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Our understanding is limited. We can only see what is happening right now, but God knows everything.
Sometimes we may spend so much time trying to find an answer that we forget to simply trust the Lord. We want to know why something happened. We want to know what will happen tomorrow. We want to know exactly how a situation will work out.
But we aren't going to have every answer.
And that's okay.
Instead of depending completely on what we can see and understand, we can depend on God.
Acknowledge God in All Your Ways
Proverbs 3:6 continues:
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
God doesn't want us to only acknowledge Him when we are struggling. We should acknowledge Him in all our ways.
We can seek Him when making decisions. We can pray when we don't know what to do. We can look to His Word for direction. And as we trust Him, we can have confidence that He will direct our paths.
We may not know exactly where the path is leading, but we know the One who is directing it.
You Don't Need to Have All the Answers
Maybe there is something in your life right now that you don't understand.
You may be wondering why God allowed something to happen. You may be waiting for an answer. You may be uncertain about what comes next.
Instead of trying to have every answer today, choose to trust the Lord.
You may not understand the situation, but you can still trust the One who does.
Today's Reminder
I don't have to understand everything to trust God. I can trust God with everything.
Whatever today brings, remember Proverbs 3:5–6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, don't depend on your own understanding, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and allow Him to direct your path.
